CANADIAN PARADISE SEEKS COACHES FOR PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

The Public Service Employee Relations Commission (PSERC) of the Government of British Columbia wants to establish a List of Qualified Contractors with the appropriate experience, skills and knowledge to assist various Ministries with employee performance management coaching services. Contractors will be expected to use the public service Employee Performance Management framework and guidelines and the documents detailing these guidelines are available <www.renewal.gov.bc.ca/performance_management.htm>online. Mandatory criteria to be included in the list of qualified contractors include a minimum of 5 years recent senior level experience in the development and training/coaching for employee performance development as well as experience with 360 degree assessment. The intent of the RFQ is to provide ministries with a list of qualified suppliers. Being qualified does not guarantee contracts.

The deadline for submission of applications is March 14, 2003. (Note: Peer Resources is not involved in applying for or vetting this RFQ.)

EXPERIENCED EXECUTIVE COACHES NEEDED

Ceridian LifeWorks Services, a division of Ceridian Corporation, a leader in corporate EAP and work/life services, has a unique opportunity for qualified, clinically-trained coaches. One of their clients, a major international health care manufacturing company, has asked them to design a coaching/counseling program to support their "top tier" senior executives in the areas of health & wellness, stress management and work/life balance.

The project spans the domains of both coaching and counseling. A small team of coaches will provide a coaching sessions, helping the person to: assess the impact and sources of stress and/or work-life imbalances, formulate plans to improve the situation, and support the person in making meaningful and lasting lifestyle changes.

Because there is the potential for discovering chronic health or mental health issues (substance abuse, PTSD, anxiety/personality disorders, clinical depression, etc.), applicants for these positions must be legally qualified to identify psychological disorders and to render diagnoses, where needed. Any counseling, rehabilitation, or therapy required would be provided by the company's Employee Assistance Program through referrals. This initiative is but one part of, and will be concurrent with, a major OD project and a culture change effort.

Ceridian is actively recruiting for qualified, clinically-trained coaches who are very familiar with the world of the corporate executive. To be considered, applicants must (1) hold a doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., M.D., etc.) in psychology, psychiatry, counseling, or a relevant behavioral health discipline and Master's level clinicians (MSW, etc.) with appropriate experience will be considered; (2) have a current, license to practice mental health counseling, psychology or psychiatry in the states of NY or NJ; (3) be able to show a valid, current liability insurance policy for professional mental health counseling; and (4) have significant, direct executive coaching experience (10+ years desired) working with top-tier executives on issues of stress, work/life balance and health/wellness.

Ceridian asks that applicants do not reply unless their background fits exactly. They are not looking for trainers, OD consultants or general "life coaches". Limited overnight travel to the client's locations may be necessary, although most sessions can be by telephone. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Selected coaches will work as a IRS 1099 sub-contractor to Ceridian, being assigned 5-10 clients to work with for a 3-6 month period. The project is slated to begin in April/May and applications are due by March 7, 2003.

WHAT'S NEW FROM COACHING LITERATURE

Peer Resources continually scans the professional and popular published literature to find articles of interest to coaches. A recent addition to the searchable, annotated bibliography at <http://www.peer.ca/coaching.html> is:

Olivero, G., Bane, K.D., and Kopelman, R.E. (Winter, 1997). Executive coaching as a transfer of training tool: Effects on productivity in a public agency. Public Personnel Management, 26, 4, 461-469.

The authors studied the impact of executive coaching on 31 managers in a US city health agency. In phase one of this project all managers participated in a three-day, classroom style training workshop that included a variety of interactive activities and focused on their work roles. The participants rated the training workshop very highly on all quantitative and qualitative measures. In phase two, the managers participated in an eight-week one-on-one coaching that detailed coaching processes tailored to the agency context. The post-training coaching included goal setting, collaborative problem solving, practice, feedback, supervisory involvement, evaluation of end-results, and a public presentation. The managers met with their coaches for one-hour each week over a two-month period. The authors found that while their training intervention with managers increased manager productivity by 22 percent, adding a one-to-one (8-week) coaching intervention after the training pushed productivity to 88 percent.
