Adding in the other benefits of membership, this opportunity to receive a free book in exchange for a publishable review is highly worthwhile.
People often say that this person or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something that one finds. It is something that one creates.
THREE STUDIES TO GUIDE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Peer Resources continually scans the professional and popular literature for articles, books, videos and other useful reference materials. They provide a brief synopsis of the work as well as citation details and summaries in a searchable format on their site at www.peer.ca/SearchB.html. Here are some recent additions:
Guttman, H.M. (May, 2004). Executive coaching. Executive Excellence, 21, 5, 19.
The author, an experienced executive coach, describes his experience being coached early in his career and the key factors that helped him grow. He then goes on to point out three traps (colluding, not letting go, and giving an ultimatum) and seven "deadly" roles that could derail executive coaching.
Sue-Chan, C. and Latham, G.P. (April, 2004). The relative effectiveness of external, peer, and self-coaches. Applied Psychology: An International Review , 53, (2), 260-278.
Two studies on two different continents using two different dependent variables examined the relative effectiveness of external, peer, and self-coaches on the performance of participants in two MBA programs. The first study involved 30 MBA students in Canada. Those who were coached by an external coach exhibited higher teamplaying behavior than did those who were coached by peers. The second study involved 23 EMBA managers in Australia. Those who were either coached by an external coach or who were self-coached had significantly higher grades than those who were coached by a peer. In both studies, an external coach was perceived by the participants to have higher credibility than their peers. In the second study, self-coaching was perceived to be more credible than coaching from peers. Satisfaction with the coaching process was highest among the managers who had an external coach.
Garcia, M. (May 7, 2004). Business-coaching services grow in demand. The Business Journal - Central New York, 18, 19, 10.
An increasing number of professionals are turning to business coaches for more than just a pep-talk. Since anyone can claim coaching credentials and there are no state or federal regulations that require a business coach to have a license, it is difficult to estimate the number of coaches currently practicing. One business coach quoted in the article said, "We are cheaper (than a business consultant) and provide better results." A client said he became interested in getting an outsider's input as to how he could increase sales. Now, every other Wednesday, he calls his business coach and talks for 45 minutes. He enjoys his coach's way of active listening.
The greatest undeveloped territory in the world lies under your hat.
